This week on my Patreon page, I pay homage to Donnie Darko, that wonderfully weird story of time travel and the manipulated denizens of the Primary and Tangent Universes. Actually, my story, The Second Tangent, is more a homage to Roberta Sparrow, Grandma Death, who gets a second chance to save the world. So, how did the mythology of Donnie Darko remain in my psyche after so many years?
I'm not sure, exactly, why Donnie Darko haunts my waking moments. It could be the emotionally disarming song by Gary Jules, Mad World, living beneath my skin which finally drove me to write and read a piece of Donnie Darko fan fiction. Really, the first piece of fan fiction I've ever written. I've certainly been listening to it enough. Just about every version you can imagine, from the original to versions covered by the amazing Post Modern Jukebox and Jasmine Thompson.
Perhaps I'm just being manipulated into assisting some time traveler on their mission to save the world, or even just a kitten in danger. Perhaps by telling more of of Roberta Sparrow's story I've destroyed us all.
One thing is for sure, I'll never be the same.
